Spread

The dollar difference between the bill rate and the pay rate — gross profit per hour before overhead.

A $27 bill rate on an $18 pay rate is a $9 spread. Spread is a dollar amount, not a percentage — markup and gross margin are the two different ways agencies turn that dollar figure into a rate they can quote or negotiate against.
